Charities Funding Boost

On Wednesday 8th April, following significant lobbying by charity leaders, the Chancellor announced a package of grant measures to assist the charity sector with the impact of Covid-19. The grants available amount to £750m and will fall into three categories:-

  1. £360m of direct grants from government departments to frontline organisations reducing pressure on the NHS such as Hospices, St John’s Ambulance and those providing support for domestic abuse victims and vulnerable children;
  2. £370m of grants to smaller organisations providing services in the heart of communities, such as delivering food, medicines and financial advice, mainly to be administered through the National Lottery Community Fund; and
  3. £20m of matched funding for public donations to the BBC’s “Big Night in” fundraiser to take place later this month.

The package of grants will not be available to all charities and are targeted at those delivering services directly linked to Covid-19. They are not meant to match every pound of funding a charity will lose during the pandemic.

The sector estimates that income lost due to the pandemic will be in the region of £4bn.

Priority recipients will be identified and the application process will be operational so that money is received over the next few weeks.

Further on 12th April, additional specific funding of £200m was also announced to support NGO’s in their work to reduce mass infections in developing countries where healthcare systems will struggle to monitor and stop the spread of the virus. The £200m will consist of:-

  • £130M to the UN appeal, mainly allocated to specific organisations, including £65m to the World Health Organisation;
  • £50m to the Red Cross International appeal for services in difficult to reach areas such as war zones; and
  • £20m for UK charities and international NGOs that are using British expertise and experience to assist with the virus.
