Regulatory Outlook 2021

Welcome to Mazars’ Regulatory Outlook for 2021. In this publication, we aim to provide a snapshot of some of the key regulatory developments for the banking sector and provide some thoughts from our Mazars experts on what banks should think about as they prepare for another busy year on the Compliance and Risk fronts.

Our Banking practice is led by a dedicated team of former regulators, industry executives and senior professionals with a wealth of knowledge and practical experience. We have asked some of these experts to pick six regulatory hot topics and tell you why these are the ones to watch and, how they can support you in quickly getting to grips with the strategic and operational challenges ahead.

With a Brexit deal finally reached, UK policymakers can now focus on their plans for the new regulatory framework while still working with the EU to agree the tenets of their cooperation on financial services. But Brexit aside there are many other important developments to consider. The implications of Covid-19 will continue to impact the banking sector and their clients as the sector (like other sectors) starts to determine what the ‘new normal’ means for the way we do business.

Financial stability will remain a key concern for regulators, who will continue to focus on credit risk identification and measurement in the context of the pandemic. In 2021, banks will need to continue to identify and report asset quality deterioration and the build-up of NPLs to maintain a clear and accurate picture of risks.

But conduct in the post Covid-19 environment will also remain a concern, with a keen interest by regulators on how compliance requirements are discharged or how data is handled where key functions and interactions are undertaken remotely.

We at Mazars are on hand to help firms navigate these challenges in 2021 and beyond.
