Mazars has a range of credible Expert Witnesses and Investigations partners that have given evidence in court and arbitrations and led complex internal investigations.

Our Forensic and Investigation Services (FIS) team has extensive experience of providing high-quality, timely and cost-effective investigations, advice, expert reports and expert testimony on financial and accountancy matters, including:

  • Litigation and arbitration  – acting as party appointed, single joint expert or expert advisor in a host of litigation, English and international arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution procedures; and
  • Investigations – providing authoritative and impartial advice in investigations and asset recoveries

Projects are led by partners with significant experience. All have a proven track record and the partners have given evidence on many occasions in the UK, Europe, Africa, USA and Asia Pacific.

At Mazars we understand that success is built on genuine expertise. It is our practise to propose an assignment team that best fits the requirements of the case, whether that team comprises solely FIS specialists or combines the experience and expertise of our FIS team with that of other industry specialists drawn from our Audit and assurance, Tax or Advisory  service lines within our global firm.

The FIS team  has experience of undertaking assignments in a wide range of sectors including: inter alia, oil & gas, shipping, mining, telecommunications, intellectual property and royalties, pharmaceuticals, and financial services (including insurance).

We provide a practical and tailored approach to each assignment, and are sensitive to concerns over business disruption, confidentiality and reputation issues. The hands on, innovative and proactive approach of our partners ensures we thoroughly investigate and analyse your case to meet your needs. We present our findings as a written report or statement and, when required, in the witness box.

Litigation and arbitration

Loss of profits Mazars has deep experience in assessing lost profits and damages in a broad range of sectors including shipping, oil and gas, hotels and leisure and construction.
Contractual disputes Mazars can advise during the litigation, arbitral or mediation process which follows where one party to a contract appears to have breached certain of the contractual terms. Alternatively, we can undertake an expert determination in resolution of the dispute.
English and international arbitration Our team has extensive experience of working on contracts which stipulate English or international arbitration rather than litigation as the dispute resolution mechanism.
Insurance claims Mazars’ insurance claims experience includes cases in the areas of business interruption / loss of profits / consequential loss, product liability, employee’s fidelity, the conduct and duties of directors and officers, property matters and professional negligence.
Matrimonial issues Mazars can carry out or challenge the necessary valuations or investigations required when matrimonial assets are disputed in a divorce; for example, the worth of a family business or shares in a private company.
Partnership disputes Partnership disagreements often arise over the profit sharing arrangements and benefits received by some or all of the partners.
Pension deficit Mazars provide independent assessments of an employer’s financial position and its ability to repay a pension scheme deficit.
Personal injury Acting as expert or expert advisor for defendant or claimant, we have over twenty years' experience of handling a substantial volume of cases arising in connection with medical negligence, personal injury and fatal accident claims.
Professional negligence Drawing, where necessary, upon the expertise of industry specialists across our global audit practice, we are routinely instructed to opine on the standards of professional competence of work undertaken by an accountant or auditor.
Valuations Mazars undertakes business and share valuations for a number of purposes, including breach of warranty claims, shareholder or partnership disputes, business interruption / loss of profit / consequential loss claims and matrimonial disputes.

Financial investigations We conduct investigations on behalf of our clients on a variety of different matters. Each case is unique, but often includes:
Fraud investigations Our team has investigated many different types of fraud across a range of sectors, both nationally and internationally, covering a number of jurisdictions overseas.
Government and regulatory inquiries These include the Serious Fraud Office, the Assets Recovery Agency, Department for Education and Skills, National Health Service, Financial Services Authority, Department of Trade and Industry, National Lottery Commission, and the Joint Disciplinary Scheme/Accountancy Investigations and Discipline Board.
