Rebecca Scott joined the Mazars Luton office as a trainee in 2001 after completing a Law degree and now works as a Director, Governance & Risk Management. She charts her career so far.
I was at a rugby match in Bedford and I saw a board with Mazars on it. I was applying to lots of chartered accountancy firms and thought I’d apply to them. I had an informal interview and a structured one. After they interviewed me they suggested that this office would suit me best. They were right and I’m still here!
I remember we finished the day with an IT talk, then all the managers and partners came down and we went out for a couple of drinks. They couldn’t have been more helpful, actually. As I was new in the area they even found me a house.
I found them a bit more like A levels than my degree. And I really worked hard for my A levels. The difficulty is mixing work and study, but I think more students are getting used to that. More students have to work through university. I did.
The role that I’ve moved into didn’t really exist before – lots of what we’re doing is very new. When you’re doing something for the first time, you often need support and that’s the benefit of working here. It’s informal but very supportive. I don’t feel scared to ring up the partner in charge, even if I have a stupid question.
Training during your professional qualification is predetermined and organised to deliver the ACA or other qualification. After my professional qualification, I was encouraged to develop my own training programme. While others in my year went on to study topics as diverse as fraud and treasury management, I developed my internal audit and risk management skills through the Institutes of Internal Audit and Risk management. I even started the IT audit exams- but I have not developed as quickly with those!
